Here is communication for homeowners who aren't certain which type of water heater they accept.

To quickly tell the difference, look for a flue. A combustion apparatus that burns fuel such as gas must vent the exhaust fumes to the outdoors through a flue (a circular chimney pipe). A flue indicates that the h2o heater burns gas or some other combustion fuel, such as propane.

In addition, a gas h2o heater has a gas piping going to information technology, a airplane pilot light, and a burner at the lesser of the hot water tank. The burner is typically behind a small metallic access panel or viewing door. If you look past the access panel or viewing door, you should see a flame unless the pilot lite is out.

An electric water heater doesn't produce combustion gasses, and then it doesn't have a flue at the acme. It does, nonetheless, take an electrical cablevision or conduit that connects it to an electrical panel. It has i or ii thermostats on the side of the tank.

No Hot Water Anywhere In the Firm

No hot water throughout the firm is by far the most common water heater complaint. This usually indicates that the h2o heater's gas burner or electric heating elements are not producing oestrus.

To be sure your entire house is without hot water, check every hot water faucet and fixture. If you discover one or more fixtures have hot water, skip to Hot Water Not Working In Part of The Firm.

Also cheque other gas appliances in the house—such as a gas range or furnace—to run into whether they piece of work. If they don't, your home's gas supply has been interrupted—call the gas company.

Adjacent, touch the h2o heater's temperature-pressure (TP) relief valve and the hot water outlet pipe above the water heater (see water heater diagrams above).

If you lot feel warmth, your h2o heater is probably working. The hot water may be getting blocked somewhere in the pipes between the water heater and the fixtures. Of form, the TP valve or pipe could still exist warm if the water heater stopped working within the final iii or 4 hours because the water inside would nevertheless exist holding some heat.

If the TP valve or outlet pipe is cold, the water heater hasn't been working for several hours. If this is the case and hot water is not available at any fixture, practise the following.

Because methods for repairing the problem may depend on whether your water heater is gas or electric, these are discussed separately below.

We'll discuss gas water heaters first. if your water heater is electric, spring downwards the page to No Hot Water—Electric H2o Heater for DIY fixes.

No Hot Water — Gas H2o Heater

If a gas water heater isn't heating, a common trouble is commonly that the pilot light has gone out. This may be caused past the gas valve, the natural gas supply, or—more than probable—the thermocouple located adjacent to the airplane pilot light.

The following preparation video for water heater service people is excellent for gas h2o heater troubleshooting. Skip forward to the 11:15 marker in the video if yous want to jump to dealing with no hot h2o.

Gas Water Heater Troubleshooting Video

Here is the procedure:

Offset, look within the inspection window at the bottom of the water heater tank for a small flame: the airplane pilot light. In some cases, this may look like a small LED calorie-free. In fact, it may be so small that y'all'll demand to dim the room lights to see it.

If the pilot light is out, follow the instructions posted on the water heater or the details beneath here to relight the pilot calorie-free.

The first thing to check on a propane water heater is the gas level in the propane tank exterior. If it'south depression, have it refilled.

In the following video, you tin can see that the most frequent cause of no hot h2o in a gas water heater is that the pilot light has gone out. This can happen if the natural gas supply is interrupted, the gas valve is turned off, or a gust of wind blows out the airplane pilot light.

This video guides you through the process of relighting a typical water heater's pilot light. The skillful thing virtually this video is that the service person is working on an actual h2o heater rather than a disassembled model like the one in the video higher up. For more near this, read on.

How to Relight a Gas Water Heater Pilot Light

The trouble is often that the pilot light has gone out. This tin exist caused by the gas supply existence interrupted, the gas valve beingness turned off, or a gust of wind blowing out the pilot flame. Expect for  a very small flame—the airplane pilot calorie-free—through the viewing window at the bottom of the h2o heater. If yous don't see a airplane pilot lite, attempt relighting the pilot. Instructions are almost e'er posted on the water heater, but these generic directions work for most water heaters:

  • one. Turn off the water heater's gas shut-off valve.
  • 2. Expect v minutes for gas to articulate from the h2o heater.
  • 3. Open the access cover to the airplane pilot lite (nether the gas valve).
  • 4. Turn the gas valve to "Pilot."
  • 5. Push downwardly the knob (or a separate pilot button) to get-go the flow of gas to the pilot. Continue holding it down.
  • 6. Employ a long lighter to reach into the access and light the airplane pilot. Continue belongings the push downwards.
  • vii. After property downwards the knob or button for about ane minute, slowly release it. Make sure the airplane pilot flame stays lit.
  • 8. Turn the water heater'due south gas valve to "On." When yous do this, you may hear the burner ignite.
  • 9. Secure the access embrace dorsum in place.

To relight the pilot low-cal of a h2o heater like the one shown in the above video:

  1. Agree downwardly the pilot switch and click the ignitor button repeatedly. A tiny spark should ignite the airplane pilot when you click the ignitor.
  2. When the pilot ignites, go on belongings down the airplane pilot switch for i minute. During this minute, the pilot flame heats the thermocouple or thermopile. This device, when heated, provides the tiny corporeality of electricity needed to operate the water heater gas valve.
  3. After one minute, slowly release the pilot switch and make sure the pilot lite stays lit. If information technology doesn't stay lit, echo the procedure.

If the Water Heater Pilot Low-cal Won't Calorie-free

If you lot the pilot flame won't lite when you lot click the ignitor, look to verify that a tiny spark is happening by the pilot. If necessary, dim the room lights. If there is a spark, gas isn't reaching the pilot. The cause may be:

• Air in the gas line. If the water heater was newly installed, the gas line is probably full of air. You'll need to purge this air from the line past holding down the pilot knob longer.

• The gas valve on the gas supply pipage may be turned off. Exist certain information technology is open up. The valve handle should be parallel to the pipage.

• The thermocouple may exist lacking. Run across more How to Supervene upon a H2o Heater Thermocouple beneath. Phone call a water heater repair person if you don't have the tools or skills to handle this.

• Depression gas pressure level or a malfunctioning gas control valve could too cause a airplane pilot lite to exit repeatedly. Call your gas company or a water heater repair person if you suspect this is the case.

If the Pilot Flame Keeps Going Out

If the pilot flame lights but keeps going out, its orifice could be dirty and clogged, making the flame pocket-sized and unsustainable. Cheque to make sure there is no obvious dirt and droppings clogging information technology.

If the pilot light goes out after you light it, click the high-limit reset switch (sometimes called a door switch), located downwardly past the viewing door at the lesser of the water tank. Please refer to the video at the top of this article and advance to the eighteen:30 point in it to see a particular of how to reset this switch. Just push button the push button of this switch and heed for a click.

And so try relighting the pilot again.

If information technology still doesn't stay lit, the trouble is almost always a defective thermocouple. This is an inexpensive part—about $20. Professional installation, which we recommend unless you are an experienced practise-it-yourselfer, should cost about $150, part included. Instructions for replacing it are in the video below.

Video: How to Replace a Water Heater Thermocouple

A malfunctioning thermocouple is a frequent crusade of gas water heater problems. The pilot low-cal may non stay lit if the thermocouple is faulty. If you lot are handy, you tin conform, clean, or replace this role yourself.

The following video shows how to diagnose and fix or replace a thermocouple.

Be sure to turn off the gas supply valve before working on these parts.

When you're finished, turn the gas dorsum on, relight the airplane pilot flame as discussed above, and see if the burner works properly.

This video does a especially adept job of detailing how to remove the thermocouple and burner associates, and how to supplant it.

Once the burner and thermocouple assembly are reinstalled and the gas supply valve is turned on, relight the pilot flame as discussed above.

Water Heater Burner Troubleshooting

If the pilot stays lit, equally it should when working properly, turn the gas valve to ON. The burner should ignite.

If the burner ignites, plow the thermostat back to an appropriate oestrus setting. Your hot water heater should work now.

If the burner does not keep, fix the thermostat at about 120 degrees F. and turn on a hot water faucet.  Expect a few minutes to see if the water heater burner ignites. If it doesn't ignite, get out the hot water running and try lowering and then raising the temperature setting on the dial until the burner ignites.

If the burner still doesn't ignite, turn off the hot water and read on. The water heater's gas valve and thermostat may be defective.

Gas leaks. If yous smell gas about it—the odour of rotten eggs or a garlic-like scent—turn the gas valve control to OFF (yous may have to push button down to plough information technology). That is the scent of natural gas. Look until the gas smell has dissipated before relighting the pilot lite.

If the gas smell is strong and doesn't dissipate, immediately turn off the gas supply valve, ventilate the infinite, and telephone call a plumber or your gas utility company from a remote location.

H2o Heater Gas Valve Troubleshooting

2 main types of water heater gas valves are commonly used on storage water heaters: mechanical and electronic. These two valves are thoroughly discussed in the following video and the video at the top of this commodity.

If yous're a service professional or an avid practice-it-yourselfer, and y'all want to empathise the differences between classic mechanical gas valves and a newer electronic gas valve, watch the video here. It also discusses how to diagnose and handle issues.

Mechanical gas valve. Repair people speak highly of classic mechanical-style gas valves because they have served tried and true for decades. You tin supervene upon a simple office such equally the thermocouple without replacing a major component.

Electronic gas valve. Many newer water heaters use a new electronic control valve called the Honeywell Smart Controller. Helpful for diagnostics, information technology has blinking lights that inform y'all or the service person about the h2o heater's status.

As you might expect, this controller is more expensive than a mechanical gas valve, as are its replacement parts. Replacement of this may cost $300 to $400, installed.

No Hot Water — Electrical Water Heater

When an electric water heater doesn't heat h2o, either the power to the water heater has been interrupted or the controls or heating elements are not working.

E'er shut off the power to an electric water heater before working on information technology. And never piece of work on it if water is pooled on the flooring almost the appliance. Shut off the circuit to the water heater at the circuit break box and phone call a qualified h2o heater repair person.

Perform these diagnostics:

+

Detect a H2o Heater Repair Pro Nearly Y'all

1 Be certain electricity is being delivered to the appliance. Check the main switch on the water heater and the circuit billow (or fuse) that serves the water heater.

If the circuit breaker has tripped, reset the circuit breaker by flipping it all the way to OFF and then dorsum to ON.

If a fuse has diddled, replace information technology with a new fuse with the aforementioned rating. If the excursion billow or fuse repeatedly blows out, call a qualified electrician to cheque and repair the circuit. Note that the water heater should non share a excursion with another appliance—information technology draws as well much ability when heating.

2 Check the high-temperature cutoff on the h2o heater. Open the console and expect for a reset push. Push it. If the button doesn't brand a clicking sound or you still don't take power after pressing it, then your high-temperature cutoff switch is probably bad. Telephone call an electrical water heater repair person.

3 If there is any h2o inside the compartment, this could cause the thermostat to malfunction. Leaking water means that your water heater may demand to be replaced. Run across Water Heater Is Leaking.

If these steps don't solve the trouble, i or both heating elements may be the problem. You can replace these yourself following the manufacturer'due south instructions, or call a water heater service professional. Encounter the following video for boosted help.

Videos: No Hot Water—Electrical Water Heater

Hither are two helpful videos that evidence how to troubleshoot an electric h2o heater that has no hot water.

In nigh cases, if the h2o heater isn't heating h2o, the electrical elements inside information technology are not getting hot. This may exist happening because the circuit breaker that controls the water heater has flipped off, the lower or upper thermostat stopped working, or electrical elements are defective.

To run across more than almost troubleshooting and repairing your electric water heater, refer to this video:

If yous find that a heating chemical element needs replacement, check out the informative video beneath by Dan Jiles. Pay attending to the fact that, even later the excursion breaker was close off, the power to the water heater was all the same on. WOOPS! This video shows you how to avert this potentially shocking—if not deadly—mistake!

A particularly helpful aspect of this video is that Mr. Jiles shows you how to remove the heating element when the tank is still full of h2o. This saves you lot from needing to drain the unabridged water heater. Be sure to turn off the ability first! Also plow off the water to the water heater and release force per unit area past lifting the lever on the TP valve as he shows.

Note: Unless the h2o heater stopped working more than a few hours ago, the water spilling out will exist hot.

Tools and supplies you'll need:
• Inexpensive water heater element wrench
• Replacement water heater element
• Phillips screwdriver
• Voltage testing meter
• Towel

Electric Water Heater Troubleshooting

This video does a proficient job of illustrating how to make certain electrical current is flowing to the electrical h2o heater. Like to the video direct above, it likewise shows how to test the thermostat and elements, merely it does a peculiarly good job of showing details such every bit the verbal screws and terminals to test with a multimeter and how to use the multimeter.

Hot Water Non Working In Function of The House

Unless y'all have 2 or more water heaters, hot h2o in some part of your house means that the water heater is working. But something is keeping the hot water from traveling to the faucets or fixtures that don't work. A typical instance of this would exist that the kitchen faucet produces hot water merely y'all can't get a hot shower.

Common reasons are:

• A cross connectedness. If you're getting full pressure on the hot h2o side of your faucets but no hot h2o, then the problem probably isn't a valve or a blockage. In that case, in that location may be a cross connectedness in the plumbing.

A cantankerous connection tin occur in a failing shower valve (or any mixing valve) that allows cold water to pass to the hot side, letting cold water into the hot water pipe. Or it can happen if a plumber makes a mistake when installing pipes.

• A closed valve. If at that place is a valve on the hot water pipe that exits the tank and goes to the non-working fixtures, be sure it'southward all the way open up.

• Mineral deposits in the pipes. If old steel h2o pipes have never been replaced, they may be filled with deposits that restrict water menstruum. Or chunks of mineral deposits may have broken loose from pipes or the interior of the water heater and traveled through the pipes to a place where they lodge (such equally at an elbow), blocking water flow.

• Ice, if the pipes have frozen recently. Frozen pipes can restrict catamenia to part of the house. See How to Repair Frozen H2o Pipes.  Of course, if the weather condition isn't freezing, this isn't the problem.

• Distance. If the water heater is far from the fixtures that aren't getting hot water, the pipes from the water heater may go through an unheated space such as a basement or cranium where they give off their oestrus. Once the pipes warm up, this shouldn't exist a problem.

Answers to this issue are turning up the heat punch on the water heater, insulating the hot water pipes, moving the water heater, installing a second water heater or calculation a recirculating pump system. Cream pipe insulation minimizes estrus loss through hot-water pipes. If you can gain access to your hot-water pipes, from the basement, for case, put foam water pipe insulation sleeves onto them.

• A h2o recirculating pump system. If you have one of these, a defective cheque valve could allow common cold water into the hot h2o pipe.

No Hot Water In An Apartment

One of the downsides of apartment living is that you lot're not necessarily in control of your own h2o heater. In addition, your neighbors' usage tin bear upon your supply of hot h2o if you share a water heater.

Your first stride should be to contact your landlord and alert them to the problem. Even though information technology may not exist specified past your lease, your landlord is responsible for providing a healthy, safety space. Hot water is considered essential to good for you living. Documenting your complaint in writing is a good idea.

Someone will demand to observe out whether or not your unit is the only one with hot water problems. If it is the only 1, a plumber should be dispatched to cheque your plumbing. If non, building-wide pipes and water heaters will demand to be fixed.

The problems that may be restricting your hot water are withal as those discussed above. With that in mind, the repairs will be the same.

If you're lucky, the solution will be relighting the pilot flame as discussed above for gas water heating or resetting a excursion billow for electric water heating.

H2o Is Not Hot Enough

Before you lot practice anything else, adjust the temperature control on the water heater toward hot. On a gas water heater, his is the punch on the gas control. On an electric h2o heater, it is the thermostat controls for the elements.

Look a little while, then check the water temperature at a faucet. Don't overdo this—the water shouldn't exist scalding hot.

If raising the heat doesn't exercise the job, the dip tube that supplies cold h2o to the tank may exist broken or croaky. (You lot can meet this in the illustration in a higher place.)

This plastic tube is supposed to direct cold h2o to the bottom of the h2o heater tank. Notwithstanding, if this tube breaks or splits (which is a common problem over time), cold water pours in at the top of the tank and mixes with the hot h2o that is on its way to the hot water pipes. The event is lukewarm water.

Either have the dip tube replaced by a water heater repair pro (HomeAdvisor), or, if the water heater is out of warranty and appears to have reached the finish of its lifespan, consider replacing it—a new water heater is likely to operate more than efficiently. You can see more most how to supersede the dip tube in the Ron Hazelton video beneath.

Not Plenty Hot Water Supply

Another common water heater problem is that the water heater doesn't produce enough hot water. In other words, the problem is with the corporeality of hot water available.

You lot tin can try raising the temperature on the h2o heater, every bit discussed straight above. If adjusting the temperature doesn't exercise the trick, try the h2o heater troubleshooting methods below.

Never Enough Hot H2o

If it seems like y'all never have plenty hot h2o in your dwelling, your water heater may be too small. If you never have enough hot water or your needs for hot water have increased because of a big new soaking tub or loftier-catamenia shower head, yous'll probably demand to go a new, larger water heater. See our Water Heater Buying Guide.

Be sure to look into tankless h2o heaters because, with this type, you never run out of hot water.

Non Enough Hot Water Recently

If your water heater supplies less hot water recently (you lot've had plenty hot water in the recent past but non now), first bank check the dial on the water heater, every bit discussed above. Then continue with the following water heater troubleshooting advice.

Common reasons are:

• Cold conditions. In cold weather, your water heater must piece of work harder to heat-upwards the common cold water coming from the h2o supply. In add-on, the water cools more equally information technology travels through pipes that run through unheated spaces. Adjust the water heater to a slightly hotter temperature to brand up for the cold.

• A leaking h2o heater. You'd probably know if information technology's leaking only, just in instance, check around its base for signs of h2o. If it is leaking, see Water Heater Is Leaking. Do this correct away to prevent h2o damage.

• Sediment buildup. Over time, mineral deposits collect at the bottom of the water heater. These eventually build up. When they do, they diminish the transfer of heat to the water.

This cuts downwardly on the water heater's efficiency and its ability to fairly rut the h2o.

The answer is to flush the h2o heater tank, which removes deposits. Come across How to Flush or Drain A Water Heater.

A drawing showing how to flush a water heater by draining it with a garden hose.

No Hot Water In The Morning

A water heater's thermostat is actually a temperature probe—a metal rod—that expands and contracts with changes in the h2o temperature inside the water heater. Information technology is less precise than a furnace or air conditioning thermostat, so temperature swings of up to 30 degrees or more are normal.

Continue in mind that the water sitting in the pipes is cold, particularly in the morning time. When you plow on the first shower, that cold h2o moves to the h2o heater. Only the water heater's burner hasn't had time to warm it. So it mixes with the warm h2o in the tank and travels to the shower head as lukewarm h2o.

You can try turning upwards the temperature adjustment valve a little, but exist conscientious not to make the h2o scalding hot!

Hot H2o Has Low Pressure or No Force per unit area

Start, determine whether the problem is with only the hot water or if it is with both hot and cold h2o.

Depression Hot and Cold Water Pressure level

If both cold and hot water pressure are low, this low water pressure is caused by:

• A partially closed shutoff valve. Inbound water passes through at least i shutoff valve before it reaches your house. The beginning ane is out by the meter.

See How to Turn Off the Water to a Fixture or the House for locations of diverse valves. Be certain valves are all the way open up by turning them fully counterclockwise. Cheque all valves.

• Low pressure being delivered by the water visitor. Phone call the water department and ask what the water pressure should be at your dwelling house.

You tin can buy an inexpensive water pressure level gauge online or at a home center. Screw this onto an exterior hose faucet, and open up the faucet fully.

Adept force per unit area is between 45 and 55 psi.  If your pressure level is below forty psi, information technology is low.  Investigate having a plumber install a water force per unit area booster. But don't overdo it: Pressure to a higher place 80 psi volition cause excessive wear on plumbing.

 • Concrete restriction in the pipes. Either some of the pipes may be too small or, if they are galvanized steel pipes, they may be chock-full with mineral deposits. Replacing pipes is the just answer for this. Call a plumber.

Only Low Hot Water Pressure

Follow the same advice as direct above, but consider that you've narrowed down the problem to hot water pressure only. This means that the cause is somewhere between the h2o heater and the fixtures.

Virtually probable, the culprit is a partially closed valve, a constriction such as old steel pipes clogged with deposits or too-small pipes, or a chunk of deposits has broken loose from the h2o heater and jammed in a hot water pipage.

The next step in diagnosing a low hot water force per unit area problem is to define where the problem exists. Is it in one expanse of the business firm, at the shower in one bathroom, or at the kitchen sink?

Low Hot H2o Pressure In Whole Business firm or Several Fixtures

If you have low hot water force per unit area throughout the house or in an unabridged area (such equally a bathroom), make sure at that place are no partially-airtight valves on the hot water pipes that serve them.

If the pressure driblet was sudden, it could exist acquired by a leak somewhere in the system. If you don't find any signs of a leak, figure that the cause is likely a chunk of deposits has lodged in the piping somewhere.

If the trouble is chronic, re-piping is probably going to exist necessary to solve it.

Either way, call a plumber.

Depression Hot Water Pressure level from a Shower Head

Low hot h2o pressure from a shower head is frequently acquired by limescale mineral deposits clogging the shower head.

Here is how to dissolve mineral deposits in a shower head:

  1. Fill a resealable plastic bag with equal parts white vinegar and hot h2o.
  2. Fit this bag over the shower head so the head is fully submerged, and secure it with rubber bands or a twist tie.
  3. Allow the solution to deliquesce the deposits for several hours.
  4. Remove the bag, and turn on the shower to rinse the shower head and wash away deposits.

If that doesn't work, see How to Replace a Shower Head for instructions on how to remove it. Look for a footling plastic disc—a catamenia restrictor. Remove this disc, reassemble the head, and try the shower once again.

Depression Hot H2o Pressure level from a Faucet

First look to come across whether the faucet has an aerator screwed onto the end of the spout. If it does, unscrew the aerator and rinse out its screen, belongings information technology upside down under a strong stream of water. If you need pliers to suspension loose its connection with the spout, wrap the aerator with duct tape starting time and so you don't scar the finish with the pliers.

If the faucet spout shows signs of limescale mineral deposits, deliquesce them as discussed to a higher place for shower heads.

Another cause of pressure loss in a faucet is misalignment of its interior workings. Delight come across How to Fix a Leaking Faucet for disassembly and repair data.

Low Hot Water Pressure level In a Washing Automobile

Plough off the hot water supply valve. Then remove the hot water supply hose from the dorsum of the washing machine.

Check the hose and/or the water inlet valve that the hose screws onto for a minor screen that's meant to take hold of whatever debris in the water supply. Using a minor screwdriver, carefully pry out the screen. Thoroughly rinse the screen and reinstall it.

Hot Water Is Also Hot

Clearly, the first thing to do if your hot water is too hot is plough down the water heater's temperature control. Note the nowadays setting (or mark it with a felt-tip pen), and then turn it toward a cooler setting, wait a couple of hours, and run across if the problem is solved. If it isn't, proceed with the post-obit water heater troubleshooting advice:

Illustration of a hand marking a water heater temperature control dial with a felt-tip pen.

If steam or excessively hot water shoots out of faucets, or you hear boiling sounds inside the water heater, the apparatus may not be shutting off at its set temperature. This condition can be unsafe, both considering hot water and steam can scald people, and because the water heater could rupture from excess force per unit area. Note: The sound of water boiling is not the same as a rumbling sound virtually the base of operations of the water heater caused past mineral sediment being churned by heat.

A high-temperature limit switch downward past the viewing door at the bottom of the tank should protect the water heater from overheating. See the video at the superlative of this article and move to the eighteen:30 mark in the video to learn how to reset this switch. Push button the button of this switch and listen for a click. If it doesn't work, it will need to be replaced.

The job of the temperature-pressure (TP) relief valve is to release excessive pressure from steam buildup, but the TP valve may have been improperly installed, or information technology may be faulty.

Check the TP valve. Lift or lower the lever on this valve. H2o should drain from the overflow pipe.

If the valve is non working, turn down the water heater's temperature and allow the water to cool, so replace the water heater's pressure relief valve.
